i’m not quite sure how significant this is outside of new zealand but sir edmund (or sir ed as he prefers to be called) who is a living legend down here, passed away today. he was the first man to successfully reach the summit of mount everest. also, i believe he was one of the earliest men to reach the south pole. often referred to as one of our ‘greatest new zealanders’ sir edmunds humanitarian work had his achievements likened to those of fellow kiwi ernest rutherford, who many years earlier had split the atom. contrasting achievements indeed imo.
he was very old so it is certainly not a shock, but none the less it is a significant loss to a country of our stature that will be felt by all to some degree. rip.

he does sound like a great person. those are some really incredible achievements! what an inspirational life he lived.
